O: MT. ABEL / MT. PINOS

We can’t all be compassionate and visionary environmentalists like the Prez. Why get bogged down in needless detail like a little extra arsenic or CO2 in the ecosystem, when greater concerns like keeping that big ol’ SUV economically fueled are at hand?  Whether you share his sensitivity or not, think about celebrating the sanctity of our magnificent National Forests by tagging along on this 9mile, 2000' vertical gain hike in the Los Padres.  Meet 9 am at the Sylmar carpool point (Encinitas Ave, just south of Roxford St; take Roxford exit off 5 freeway, just north of where the 405 freeway merges into the 5 freeway, in the north San Fernando Valley).  Bring 2 quarts liquid, lunch, and hiking-style boots.  We may make a local dinner stop afterwards for those with an interest. C: DINNER AND WALK IN SANTA MONICA

Tired of those early hikes/walks? So am I! Meet on the north/west corner of San Vicente Blvd and Ocean Ave., in Santa Monica at 1 pm. We will walk to the 3rd St. Promenade(perhaps the pier, too) and back. It is an easy walk. Please no hiking boots, bring a sweater, comfortable shoes. Tom Hayden carried a lot of the clubs legislation during his Sacramento service and is the club’s choice in the 5th District. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING

Come support your Management Committee. Be part of the decision-making process and give them your great ideas! To place an item on the agenda contact the Chair one week before the meeting. Expect brisk winds and high seas, adventurous sailing, hiking, snorkel, dinghy.  Food is $30 additional paid at the boat. Want to meet active people in their 20s & 30s and discover the great outdoors?  Join us for this introduction to our fun section.  The hike is approx 5 mi, 800’ gain on one of our favorite trails, ldr’s choice.  Meet 9:30 am at WLA rideshare pt.  Bring lunch, 1 qt water, sturdy shoes, daypack, sunscreen, and light jacket.  Rain cancels.  Ldrs: STEVEN HAN, SAM RAMIREZ.

O: PLACERITA CANYON TO THE WATERFALL

Enjoy a moderately paced hike at Placerita Canyon. The hike is 6 miles with about 1100' loss/gain. Meet 9 am at the Nature Center in Placerita Canyon State Park. Take 14 Fwy (Antelope Valley) to Placerita Canyon exit, R to park. Bring 2qts water, lugsoles boots, sunscreen, windbreaker, potluck dish for 4-6 people, plate, cup, and utensils. O: GRIFFITH PARK HIKE AND DIM SUM FEAST

Back again by popular demand! Enjoy scenic vistas on this EZ/mod 5 mi, 1200' gain hike in Griffith Park (approx 2.5 hrs). After, meet for a dim sum feast (directions provided at trlhd.) (If you've never experienced Dim Sum (a special Chinese brunch), this is your chance.) Meet 8:30 am at the Upper Merry-go-round parking lot (E side of Park, off Griffith Park Dr.). Bring 1 liter H2O, lugs, shades, hat, light jacket, and $$ for feast (about $11/ea). If hike cancelled by rain, meet at Golden Dragon Restaurant, 960 N. Broadway, LA (Chinatown) at 11:30 am. C: INDIE MOVIE NIGHT

The original Indie Movie Night is back! For you independent and foreign film fans, a great local venue for these films is the Laemmle Playhouse 7 in Pasadena. Since advance notice required for the event, the actual films playing at time of event are unknown, so we'll select our film(s) at the event. Meet for dinner before the film at 6 pm at the rear of a walkway called Arcade Lane, 696 E. Colorado, at El Portal restaurant (across street from theater). Otherwise, since most films start at 7:15 or just thereafter, meet in front of the theater at 673 E. Colorado at 7 pm. Coffee (optional) to follow next door at Vroman's. C: HIPPER-THAN-THOU AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES, UNIVERSAL CITY

It's time once again to take in a hot movie at one of the hippest places in the San Fernando Valley: the Cineplex Odeon Theaters at Universal City -- where an ordinary Saturday seems like a holiday! We'll meet in front of the theater at 12  noon (look for a handwritten Sierra Club sign) and buy tickets to a matinee. Let us nosh at a nearby eatery before or after the movie, depending on what time our flick starts. Bring enough dollars for parking (about $7) movie, popcorn and lunch. O: BRIDGES AND MANSIONS OF PASADENA CONDITIONING WALK

Get your midweek exercise and have fun to on a 1 ½ hour conditioning walk through the treelined scenic side of Pasadena w/views of the Arroyo Seco and the city lights from a historic bridge.  No beginners or tigers please.  Meet on the corner of California and Orange Grove Boulevards at 7 pm  From the 210 fwy, exit at Orange Grove, head south about 1/2 mi. to Calif. June 15 - June 17 Friday night - thru Sunday noon
O: First Annual Rafting/Fun/Party Extravaganza on the Kern River
Come join us for a fun weekend that includes 1½ days of rafting on the exciting Kern River, only 3 short hours from LA. Beginners Welcome!! The weather in June will probably be about 90 degrees. We will camp along the Kern River with all the amenities including: hot showers, flush toilets, foosball table, ping-pong table, horseshoes and a Sand Volleyball Court. Our river guides will take care of all of our appetite needs providing delicious meals that include Saturday breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday breakfast and lunch

Saturday, our guides will steer us down the twists and turns of the Kern River in 7 person rafts, then after lunch we will have the opportunity to conquer the river in "Maniyaks", which are one and two man inflatable kayaks (you can stick to the big rafts if you choose). Of course, our master guides will be instructing us all the way. Later, we can play volleyball and sit around a campfire and tell stories, or maybe a field trip to a local nightspot in Kernville. June 23, Saturday, Noon to 10 pm
SOL Festival 2001

At Griffith Park, the Old Zoo area, we will stake out our own section. The festival includes food, music, art, performances, music, booths, and crafts, all to benefit human rights. In addition, the band Ozomatli is scheduled to perform (unknown time). For further details, check the website. Cost is $10 in advance (see website for details), $15 at the event. 30 tickets at $10 price have been reserved for Sierra Club, first come, first get, otherwise $15 unless purchased in advance. Directions: From 5 Freeway, get off on Los Feliz, go west about 1 block to Riverside Drive/Griffith Park Drive (same street, name changes at Los Feliz), go north towards park. Drive about 1 mile and when you arrive at the main part of the park, make a left at the stop sign (look for signs for "Merry Go-Round" and there may be signs for the event). There is a large, lengthy parking lot just up the road and to the right. Look for signs directing you to the festival, and/or signs for "The Old Zoo". You will have to walk a few blocks. The event is expected to draw about 3,000 people, parking may be difficult. Seating is on the lawn. Look for a Sierra Club flag for our location. JUNE 29-JULY 4 FRI-WED 20s 30s/Backpacking
O: JUNE LAKE / YOSEMITE LODGE BUS TRIP:

NOT A BACKPACK; stay in resorts/cabins. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the SC Outing Progam, follow in the footsteps of John Muir on our hike and sightseeing tour of the Eastern Sierras and Yosemite Valley. SPACE IS VERY LIMITED. No beginners. Leave Fri. evening, return Wed evening. Moderate hiking with great views in Mammoth Lakes, Tuolumne Meadows, and Yosemite Valley. Possible hike to Half Dome and visit to Mono Lake area. Relax in evening at June Lake Lodge with swimming pool and indoor jacuzzi and in Yosemite with many ranger-led programs. Will have opportunities for biking, swimming, and photography. Cost includes bus, 3 nights lodging at June Lake Resort, 2 nights in Yosemite Valley cabins, park fees, plus Wed night dinner. All persons get own bed.
