The following activities are free to all participants unless stated otherwise in a write-up.

Neither a Sierra Club nor a 20s & 30s Singles Section (20s & 30s) membership is required to participate in these activities, but there are activities discounts and other benefits that accompany such Membership.

The addresses to all rideshare points mentioned in the following activity write-ups can be found at the Angeles Chapter Rideshare Meeting Places.

Each of our activities, other than social events and meetings, is classified as an outing and is given a designated rating; that rating is disclosed by a Rating Code 'letter' at the beginning of the activity write-up. For a definition of all Rating Codes, see the schedule of Angeles Chapter Outings and Activities.

This section abides by all Angeles Chapter and 20s & 30s policies on its outings and other activities. If you plan to participate in them, please familiarize yourself with those Angeles Chapter Outings Policies and 20s & 30s Policies.

No children or pets are to be brought to any 20s & 30s activity unless the write-up specifically states otherwise. And all persons under 18 years old who do attend a 20s & 30s activity must be accompanied by a guardian.

BRIDGES AND MANSIONS OF PASADENA CONDITIONING WALK
O: Get your midweek exercise and have fun too on a 1 1/2 hour, 4 mi conditioning walk through the treelined scenic side of Pasadena, w/views of the Arroyo Seco and the city lights from an historic bridge. No beginners or tigers please. Meet on the corner of California Blvd and Orange Grove Blvd in Pasadena at 7:00 pm. From the 210 fwy, exit at Orange Grove, head S about mi to Calif Blvd. From the 110 fwy, exit Orange Grove, head N about 1 mi to Calif Blvd. Bring comfy walking shoes and water. Rain cancels. SWING DANCING AT THE DERBY
Dust off those dancing shoes, put on your best duds and come dancing at The Derby! Take the intro lesson, dance w/the best dancers in Los Angeles, enjoy the retro clothing, or just relax and listen to the music while sipping a drink on a comfy couch. Classes are from 8 to 9 pm. Dancing and live music from 9 pm 'til closing. Cover is $7 at the door. Event is for 21 and older, YOU MUST BRING ID TO ENTER. Dress is 40-50s period or stylish, dance-appropriate duds and shoes. SWING DANCE
C: Come on out and learn to swing dance. This is not a waltz! It's fast, fun and called East Coast Swing, Jitterbug or Jive. Dance to a live band. Event is put on by the Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association; most participants will be beginners or novices, so don't be shy! Free dance class by an Association instructor! Lesson starts 7:30 pm (beginners asked to attend), band plays from 8-11:30 pm. Meet at Fellowship Hall, 997 E Walnut in Pasadena. From E 210 fwy, exit Lake Ave, go straight across Lake until it becomes Corson. Make 2nd R onto N Catalina Ave, go S 1 blk to Locust. Meet inside at back of auditorium. THIRD ANNUAL CREATIVE PICNIC
Once again, join your hostesses for this popular potluck lunch on the grass at Will Rogers Park. Bring a chair or blanket, money for parking, a delicious potluck item -- we'll be awarding 3 ribbons for the best dishes! -- and a two-to-five minute presentation of artwork, literature, photography, music or other creative item to share with your friends! You can bring your own creative work or just a personal favorite. Shyer folks can feel free to just eat and listen. We will meet on the park green north of the polo field at 1:00 p.m. There will be an optional no-host walk after the picnic. Rain cancels. GENERAL MEETING -- ADVENTURING AT THE GRAND CANYON - TWO GNARLY RIM TO RIVER BACKPACKS
Explore our great Sierra Club section, meet new people, and learn about future activities. Program includes slide show and guest speaker Bill Oliver. From the north rim, an incredible 3-day descent to Tapeats Creek and Deer Creek. From the south rim, a 3-day loop descent of the fearsome Boucher Trail and back out up the Hermit Trail. A Wilderness Travel Course leader, Bill has adventured throughout the canyonlands of the Colorado Plateau. Free admission and refreshments. NEWCOMERS HIKE IN WLA
O: Want to meet active people in their 20's & 30's and discover the great outdoors? Join us for this introduction to our fun section. The hike is approx 5 mi, 800' gain on one of our favorite trails, ldr's choice. Meet 9:30 am at WLA rideshare pt. Bring 1 qt water, lunch, sturdy shoes, daypack, sunscreen, and light jacket. OAKWILDE / SWITZERS
O: This leader's favorite watch, the subject of many compliments, particularly from women ;-), recently went belly up. He was devastated, bordering on clinical depression, adrift in a sea of uncertainty. Despite his shock and confusion, his ever-so-reliable biological clock told him it's time for this fine autumn hike up in the Arroyo Seco area of the San Gabriel mountains. Approximately 10 miles, 1800' vertical gain. Meet 9:30 am at the La Canada carpool pt. Bring minimum 1 qt water, lunch, and lugsoled hiking boots. Co-Ldrs: GARY CROW & STEVEN HAN

O: Come join us for two of the simple pleasures of life! Meet for pizza at Shakey's, then walk or drive to CSUN for a free screening of "Austin Powers, the Spy Who Shagged Me". Meet 6:10 pm at Shakey's, 10340 Reseda Blvd (N of Devonshire, next to McDonald's); optional 3 mi RT walk to movie. AIDS WALK LA
C: Join us in supporting the annual Los Angeles AIDS Walk. Get some exercise while raising money to fight this deadly disease and support people with HIV and AIDS. Walk is 10 kilometers (6.2 mi), slight gain/loss on local streets. Meet 8:30 am at Paramount Studios, 5555 Melrose Ave in Hollywood; look for our section's team table after registering. Bring: water, sun protection, good walking shoes. ETHNIC DINING IN CERRITOS
Come to Cerritos at 1:00 pm for delicious Chinese food at the elegant Prince Seafood Restaurant. This restaurant is located at South St and Pioneer Blvd (same shopping center as Sports Mart). Prince Seafood is located around the corner from the Red Ribbon Bakery. Lunch specials start at $4.95. If you need further directions, call the restaurant at 562-809-1812. OKTOBERFEST IN THE SOUTH BAY
C: Just in time to scare up some fun before Halloween comes -- Oktoberfest! This traditional German celebration features music from authentic Oom Pa Pa bands; wild dancing (including the Polka and Chicken Dance); tests of skill, strength and courage, such as the infamous Stein Holding Contest; and, of course, lots of food and drink for everyone! And you don't even have to leave the country. Bring comfortable shoes, a jacket, and $$ for food and drink. Admission is $6, but look for discount coupons in local papers. Meet 8:00 pm at entrance to the Beer Garden at Alpine Village, in Torrance. (From 405 fwy, go S on Harbor (110) fwy, exit at Torrance Blvd, turn L to pkg lot.) LOS LIONES TO PARKER MESA OVERLOOK HIKE/LUNCH
O: Join us for this moderate 6 mi, 900' gain hike that starts at the Los Liones trailhead in Pacific Palisades. The trail begins in a wooded area and then becomes a fire road. There are spectacular 180 degree views from Parker Mesa that extend from Century City to Santa Monica to Catalina. After a short rest and snack we will return to the trailhead for an optional lunch at the Reel Inn in Malibu. Meet at the trailhead at 10 am. From Pacific Coast Hwy, take Sunset Blvd E to Los Liones Dr (2nd street on L, before Palisades Dr). Turn L and go to the end. From 405 Fwy, exit on Sunset Blvd. Go W and turn R on Los Liones Dr (2 blks after Palisades Dr). Bring water, sunscreen, lugsoles or sturdy shoes, and $$ for optional lunch afterwards. UNITED NATIONS DAY - NO ANCHOVIES HIKE
O: Come celebrate this most international of holidays by joining us on one of our most legendary hikes! We'll view a beautiful sunset, twinkling city lights, and a full moon from atop the Santa Monica Mtns - where pizza, soft drinks and dessert will be delivered. In the spirit of diversity, participants will have a choice of international pizza toppings. World-class party animals may bring wine, an exotic side dish, or dessert to share. OK for beginner hikers, experienced eaters! Bring jacket, 1 qt H20, & $5 for food. Conservation fundraiser - any proceeds leftover from the event will be donated to an environmental cause. GRIFFITH PARK HIKE AND DIM SUM FEAST
O: Back by popular demand! Enjoy scenic vistas on this EZ/mod 5 mi, 1100' gain hike in Griffith Park (approx 2.5 hrs). After, meet for a dim sum feast (directions given at trlhd). Meet 8:30 am at the upper merry-go-round parking lot (E side of Park, off Griffith Park Dr. Exit Los Feliz from 5 fwy). Bring 1 ltr H2O, lugs, shades, hat, light jacket, and $$ for feast (about $10/ea). If hike cancelled by rain, meet at Golden Dragon Restaurant, 960 N. Broadway, LA (Chinatown) at noon. SANDSTONE PEAK
O: If like some of us, you get oh-so-depressed going from daylight savings to standard time, this hike is absolutely guaranteed to uplift you… You do the dirty work putting one foot in front of the other on a 7 mi, 1500' gain hike; spiritual renewal, well, that's optional. Sandstone Peak has the minor distinction of being the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains, w/excellent views when clear. Meet 9:30 am at the West LA carpool pt, or 10:30 am at the Malibu carpool pt. If there's enough interest, we'll stop off at a local Malibu joint afterwards for an early dinner, coke/beer, or whatever. Bring min 1 qt liquid, lunch/snack, and lugsole-style hiking boots. Leaders, hosts, and anyone else interested in our fun and exciting activities are highly encouraged to attend this party, in order to help plan and coordinate events for the next newsletter and general schedule. CRUISE THE MEXICAN RIVIERA

DANCING AT THE CRUSH BAR
This nightclub, w/tunes from the '60's and '70's, is a great place to dance! Meet in front at 10 pm. Cover charge is $10. The Crush Bar is located at 1743 N Cahuenga Blvd in Hollywood (exit Cahuenga Blvd from the 101 Fwy & go W a few blocks down, N of Hollywood Blvd). Parking is avail for a fee. VENICE HISTORIC WALKING TOUR OF ABBOT KINNEY DISTRICT
C: Don't miss this fun & informative 2-hr docent-led stroll back into a little known part of Venician history. We'll learn about daredevil stunt flyers, Venice City Hall, Venice jail, the Venice Tigers major league baseball team, a haunted library, Abbot Kinney's 1914 home, Pacific Electric trolley station, U.S. Island, & Miniature Railway Ticket Station. Afterwards, rest your feet & enjoy a delicious lunch at one of Venice's well-known eateries, ldr's choice. Tour starts 9 am. Bring jacket, pint of H20, $ for lunch. FISH CANYON
O: After seeing a film concerning the paranormal, and rightfully feeling spooked, a hike leader decided to consult a seer. "As I look deep into your soul, I see you're a Pisces? Let us see what alignment the planets are in." Strange - while not of the fish sign, I was contemplating this cute stream canyon in the western San Gabriels as a hike location. Could there be something to this sixth sense stuff? The hike is 7-8 mi, 500' gain max. Meet 9:00 am at the Sylmar carpool point - Encinitas Ave, just S of Roxford St; take Roxford exit off 5 fwy, just N of where 405 fwy merges into 5 fwy in the N San Fernando Valley. O: Cooper Canyon is one of the most popular trails in the Angeles National Forest; this is your opportunity to enjoy it once more or to discover it for the first time. This is a moderately paced
approx 6 mile, 1200' gain/loss hike near Mt. Waterman. Meet 9 am at the La Canada Carpool point with lugsole boots, 2 quarts water, lunch, sun protection, and a jacket. Beginners in good shape OK,
