JUNE 19 SAT - Fly from LAX to Honolulu, then transfer to an inter-island flight to Lihue. Pick up vans, groceries and supplies and head to cabins at Kahili Mountain Park. Day hikers will stay here three nights.
JUNE 20 SUN - After breakfast drive up to Kokee State Park.. Backpackers begin moderate trek (4mi, 500' gain) into Sugi Grove on the edge of the NaPali - Kona Forest Reserve. Extra gear will be left in the cabins. The non-backpacking day hikers will be lead by Dick Ramirez on a discovery tour around Kaua'i with easy to moderate day hiking.
JUNE 21 MON - Layover day for backpackers to hike in Alakai Swamp (mostly on boardwalk). Dick and day hikers explore Kaua'i.
JUNE 22 TUE - Backpackers hike to trailhead for pick-up by day hikers. All stay two nights in rustic cabins in lush Kokee State Park.
JUNE 23 WED - Grand Napali coast overlook hike (called "Most Scenic"by Outside magazine), 6 to 10..5 mi, 1,500' gain. Overlooking the most remote valleys of the Napali coast, you'll stand 2,000 feet above their verdant floors.
JUNE 24 THU - Drive to condos. Tour National Tropical Botanical Gardens. View Wailua (Fantasy Island) Falls.
JUNE 25 FRI - Snorkel at renowned Poipu Beach with Blue Sturgeons. The condo will provide respite for our final night on Kaua'i, and the lavish buffet at the Hyatt Regency will be our ALOHA DINNER.
JUNE 26 SAT - Drive to Lihue Airport for the end of the Sierra Club trip.

MEALS: All breakfasts and dinners included as stated with ALL participants helping to shop for, prepare, cook and clean up the meals. Lunches and snacks are purchased by the participants. Grocery stores and/or eateries available when not backpacking.
TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS: All ground transportation and logistics on Kaua'i is included as stated in the itinerary. Side trips, special excursions, etc., which are not on the itinerary, are not allowed.
MISCELLANEOUS INCLUDED: Two nights shared rooms at condo/hotel, 3 nights cabins - backpackers/ 5 nights cabins - day hikers, group cooking and commissary gear, admission fees, backpack stoves and fuel, water purifiers.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Day pack, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, ten essentials, snorkeling gear, personal items, lunches and snacks, etc. A detailed list will be sent in May. Backpackers additionally need a backpack and waterproof tent (best to share), and will carry a share of the group food and equipment.
PRE-TRIP MEETING: An early June, highly recommended, pre-trip meeting with slides and refreshments provides an opportunity to meet fellow participants, find a tentmate and ask questions.
RESERVATIONS: Send $200 deposit ($45 is non-refundable) and three (3) large (#10) self-addressed stamped envelopes to the leader, Bill Crane, 22351 Mission Circle, CA, 91311-1257. *Cost $655 w/SC# / $721 non-mem before April 1; April 1-June 1 $705/$775; after June 1 $755/$830.
BALANCE DUE: April 5, 1999. Please call me if your payment must be late, OR RISK LOSING YOUR RESERVATION.
CANCELLATIONS: There is a $45 per person non-refundable processing fee. Additionally, cancellations received in writing after April 5 - $200 penalty; after May 3 - $327.50 penalty; after June 4 or no-shows - $645. NO EXCEPTIONS!
AIRLINE TICKETS: These will be billed to you at the best possible group rate with a reliable airline. Consider that we are traveling in the high summer season and on a weekend, and getting the lowest airfare, thus saving you money. To avoid confusion to yourself and to your hard working leaders, you must fly over with the group arrangement. This is necessary to maintain our group buying power and to keep the group together. Summer airfares are usually published in March; you will be notified. We DO NOT wait at the airport to pick up passengers from other flights and will make just ONE trip to the Lihue Airport for departures the morning of Saturday, June 26, 1999. You may extend your airline return date as you do not need to fly back with the group.
CONDITIONING: Backpackers MUST submit a resume of recent hiking and backpacking experience and conditioning. Hikes vary from moderate to strenuous, however they are moderately paced (we do not race). See the current Schedule of the Angeles Chapter, Sierra Club for local hiking and conditioning opportunities. All of the trip day hikes, swimming and snorkeling are optional.
DOCUMENTS: Your Sierra Club number. The Hawaii State Parks system requires a photocopy of your Drivers License for the cabin/camping permit.
END OF TRIP: The Sierra Club trip ends on the morning of Saturday, June 26, 1999, at the Lihue Airport.
