  Have you ever wanted to learn to backpack & get away from the crowds of people? Learn how to backpack in this 3 Sunday evening course (April 28, May 5 & 19) culminating in a trip to a Redwood Forest grove in Sierra Nevada's on June 1-2. Spend evening at Backpacking Store (date TBA). MAY 24-27 FRIDAY-MONDAY (Memorial Day)

O: 3rd ANNUAL BIG SUR - MONTEREY MEMORIAL DAY LODGE BUS TRIP:

Not a backpack.  Leave LA Friday evening for 3 days of sightseeing and hiking in the Big Sur and Monterey areas.  In Monterey, see Cannery Row made famous by Steinbeck’s novels, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  We will take you on a walking tour of Monterey and explore some of historic Monterey’s old buildings along with the shops and restaurants.  Take our bus to see the spectacular coastline, including the seventeen mile drive, and sea otter country from Monterey to Big Sur.  Easy day hikes and walks planned to coastal and Redwood forest areas including Point Lobos State Reserve and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park with possibilities to see sea otters, sea lions, and harbor seals, and the Monterey Cypress tress. Stay in nice rooms near downtown Monterey and restaurants. Motel has indoor swimming pool & Jacuzzi. Prices for SC members are $360 per person with 2 persons per room, Early sign-up discount---Deduct $10 if sign-up received before February 28. O: VENTANA-BIG SUR TRAVERSE BACKPACK BUS TRIP:

O: Ventana-Big Sur Traverse Backpack Bus Trip: Leave LA Friday evening for 3 day moderate  level backpack in Ventana Wilderness above Big Sur. Backpack from Ventana Inn  ascending 1,700' in 4.6 mi with ocean vistas. Then down 1.6 mi to shady Terrace Creek Camp , nestled amongst coastal redwoods.  Optional layover day hike to wallow, wade and swim in the Big Sur River's pools. Monday return to bus on Pine Ridge Trail (1130' loss, 200' gain, 5.3 mi). Bring veggie to toss into our potluck salad, and happy hour goodies to share. Share bus with lodge group. $115 wSC#/$130 non-member includes bus, camp and entrance fees, Monday dinner and bus refreshments.   JUNE 22 - 29     SATURDAY - SATURDAY

O: TWENTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL HAWAIIAN ISLANDS BKPK & CABINS/DAY HIKES: Kauai, The Garden Isle. 2 groups (dayhiking/cabins group & a backpack group) separated two nights. For backpackers and day hikers. Optional 3 day/2 night backpack (6 mi, 2,200 loss) descends into Waimea Canyon. Layover day hike to explore side canyons. Exit backpack  (8 mi, 800' loss) to Waimea Town. Day hikers enjoy moderate hikes (4 -7 mi/500-1,500 gain) in Kokee State Park.  Cabins all week (except for the backpackers 2 nights away) with 1 night condo. Snorkel/swim at picturesque, less crowded beaches including Queen's Bath.  Tour new Limahuli National Tropical Botanical Gardens. Exclusive: Manuel's Ginger Chicken. Additional moderate day hike Shipwreck Bch to Maha'ulepu. Meals cooked group commissary style - all help with duties. JULY 3-7      FRIDAY - WEDNESDAY        

O: MONO MEADOWS TO WAWONA YOSEMITE BACKPACKING BUS TRIP: Leave LA Wed afternoon for a moderate 4 day backpack in the spectacular Yosemite Backcountry.   Starting in Mono Meadows, off the Glacier Point Road, we will go along Illilouette Creek near Mt Starr King on this 26 mile, 3,600 foot gain, 6,900 foot loss trip.   We will continue up Buena Vista Creek to Buena Vista Lake.  The beautiful Buena Vista Lake will be one of our campsites, set against the nearby Buena Vista Peak.  The trip will take us past the Chilnualna Lakes and spectacular Yosemite backcountry with many of the magnificent Yosemite mountain ranges in view.  Our final day, will give us an opportunity to see Chilnualna Fall when we end our backpack at Wawona.  One day we will backpack over 8 miles. NO BEGINNERS. O:  YOSEMITE BUS LODGE TRIP: Not a backpack.  Join us as we enjoy hiking, sightseeing with opportunities for bike rides, river floating, photography and other activities in spectacular Yosemite National Park.  No beginners.  Leave Wednesday afternoon, return Sunday evening.  Moderate hiking with great views in Yosemite Valley area, Tuolumne Meadows, & possibly Eastern Sierras.  Relax in evening with swimming pool many ranger led programs, and dining opportunities in Yosemite Valley.  Space is very limited.  Cost includes bus, 4 nights lodging in Yosemite Valley Cabins and motel in Oakhurst first night, park fees, plus Sun. night dinner.  All persons own bed.  Send 2 4X9 SASE, H&W phones, SC#, check (Sierra Club), $380 per person until May 31, after May 31- $405 per person.  Non-member add $35 to RESERVATIONIST /ASSISTANT LEADER:. O:  MINERAL KING BACKPACK TRIP:  Moderate 26 mile, 4200 gain backpack through the extraordinary Mineral King area of Sequoia National Park.  With one layover day, we'll start this loop trip heading over Timber Gap, passing Pinto Lake, Little Five Lakes, Big Five Lakes and Columbine Lakes with a spectacular finish crossing Sawtooth Pass for an exciting glissade back to our trailhead.  This beautiful foray into the Great Western Divide area should prove both invigorating and refreshing with high snow peaked ranges and pristine alpine lakes.  Send check for $50 (refundable at trailhead) payable to the Sierra Club Backpacking Section, 2 SASE, H & W phones and recent backpacking experience/conditioning and carpool info to LEADER:  MARK JACOBS  CO-LEADER:  TIM LUZZI

O:  EASTERN SIERRA LODGE TRIP: Not a Backpack. Leave Thursday evening for a great 4 day trip in the beautiful Eastern Sierras.  Mammoth Lakes will be our base, but we will be doing moderately paced hikes in Rock Creek, Mammoth Lakes, Devils Postpile, and others.   We will do side trips to the Bodie Ghost Town and Mono Lake with optional kayaking. O:  NORTHERN YOSEMITE CANYONS & LAKES BACKPACKING TRIP: Moderate 45 mile shuttle trip, 2000' net gain backpack through glacier gouged Virginia and Matterhorn Canyons with two layover days and stops at Miller, Snow and Arndt Lakes starting at Virginia Lakes Resort and ending at Twin Lakes Resort.  Magnificent streams, beautiful vistas and unparalleled beauty are promised on this trek through this glorious section of the High Sierra in Yosemite National Park.  Miller Lake, secluded Arndt Lake and the areas of Burro Pass and Sawtooth Ridge will make this a trip you will always remember. O: LASSEN VOLCANIC NP BACKPACK BUS TRIP: Leave LA Thur eve for 4 day moderate level backpack in Lassen Volcanic NP from King's Creek (7286'), to Corral Meadow (4 mi, 1400' gain). 2nd day optional layover day hike to Drakesbad and Boiling Springs Lake. 3rd day backpack Pacific Crest Trail to Swan Lake 4 mi, 664' gain) . Monday return to bus at Summit Lake (5 mi, 721' gain-678' loss) passing Twin and Echo Lakes.
