Learn how to backpack in this 3 Sunday evening course (April 28, May 5 & 19) culminating in a trip to a Redwood Forest grove in Sierra Nevada's on June 1-2. MAY 24-27 FRIDAY-MONDAY (Memorial Day)


Not a backpack.  Leave LA Friday evening for 3 days of sightseeing and hiking in the Big Sur and Monterey areas.  In Monterey, see Cannery Row made famous by Steinbeck’s novels, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  We will take you on a walking tour of Monterey and explore some of historic Monterey’s old buildings along with the shops and restaurants.  Take our bus to see the spectacular coastline, including the seventeen mile drive, and sea otter country from Monterey to Big Sur.  Easy day hikes and walks planned to coastal and Redwood forest areas including Point Lobos State Reserve and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park with possibilities to see sea otters, sea lions, and harbor seals, and the Monterey Cypress tress. Stay in nice rooms near downtown Monterey and restaurants. Motel has indoor swimming pool & Jacuzzi. Prices for SC members are $360 per person with 2 persons per room, Early sign-up discount---Deduct $10 if sign-up received before February 28. O: Ventana-Big Sur Traverse Backpack Bus Trip: Leave LA Friday evening for 3 day moderate  level backpack in Ventana Wilderness above Big Sur. Backpack from Ventana Inn  ascending 1,700' in 4.6 mi with ocean vistas. Then down 1.6 mi to shady Terrace Creek Camp , nestled amongst coastal redwoods.  Optional layover day hike to wallow, wade and swim in the Big Sur River's pools. Monday return to bus on Pine Ridge Trail (1130' loss, 200' gain, 5.3 mi). Bring veggie to toss into our potluck salad, and happy hour goodies to share. O: TWENTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL HAWAIIAN ISLANDS BKPK & CABINS/DAY HIKES: Kauai, The Garden Isle. 2 groups (dayhiking/cabins group & a backpack group) separated two nights. For backpackers and day hikers. Optional 3 day/2 night backpack (6 mi, 2,200 loss) descends into Waimea Canyon. Layover day hike to explore side canyons. Exit backpack  (8 mi, 800' loss) to Waimea Town. Day hikers enjoy moderate hikes (4 -7 mi/500-1,500 gain) in Kokee State Park.  Cabins all week (except for the backpackers 2 nights away) with 1 night condo. O: MONO MEADOWS TO WAWONA YOSEMITE BACKPACKING BUS TRIP: Leave LA Wed afternoon for a moderate 4 day backpack in the spectacular Yosemite Backcountry.   Starting in Mono Meadows, off the Glacier Point Road, we will go along Illilouette Creek near Mt Starr King on this 26 mile, 3,600 foot gain, 6,900 foot loss trip.   We will continue up Buena Vista Creek to Buena Vista Lake.  The beautiful Buena Vista Lake will be one of our campsites, set against the nearby Buena Vista Peak.  The trip will take us past the Chilnualna Lakes and spectacular Yosemite backcountry with many of the magnificent Yosemite mountain ranges in view.  Our final day, will give us an opportunity to see Chilnualna Fall when we end our backpack at Wawona.  One day we will backpack over 8 miles. O:  EASTERN SIERRA LODGE TRIP: Not a Backpack. Leave Thursday evening for a great 4 day trip in the beautiful Eastern Sierras.  Mammoth Lakes will be our base, but we will be doing moderately paced hikes in Rock Creek, Mammoth Lakes, Devils Postpile, and others.   We will do side trips to the Bodie Ghost Town and Mono Lake with optional kayaking.
