Location: Kern County, about 9 miles west of Kernville, 185 miles from Los Angeles

DRIVING ROUTE 1

  • From Lake Isabella (city) drive north on Hwy 155 for 7.0 miles to where it turns left in Wofford Heights.
  • Drive 7.7 miles farther to Greenhorn Summit. Turn right (north) on 24S15. This is a dirt road just past a maintenance shed. Note your odometer and go as follows:
  • At 4.3 miles, Tiger Flat Campground. Keep straight on 24S15.
  • At 6.6 miles, a road junction with a sign "Camp Mountain Meadow GSA". Park here.

HIKING ROUTE 1

A trail (31E66) starts just north of the parking area (7,280'). Follow it up the slope to the left, and then west past Portuguese Peak's east side. Continue 1½ miles to a trail junction (8,100'). Turn left (east) and follow the trail to the summit.

Gain: 2200 feet
Time: 2 hours one way
Rating: Class 1, moderate
Navigation: Intermediate

From the summit of Bohna Peak, go down the north ridge to a saddle at 6,450'. Continue north along the ridge on a trail over bump 6,991' to a trail junction at 7,400' which is marked by a 4x4 post (5 mi.). Turn right (east) and continue on trail for about a mile and 700' gain to a trail junction at 8,100'. Keep right and follow the trail about ¼ mile to the summit.


HISTORICAL NOTE

In January 1964, Sunday Peak was added to the Sierra Peaks List. Two months later it was removed.
